Breaking News #201
Jerry Stuckart is the 2008 AZ BCA 8-ball Champion
|
The BCA Championship was moved to a new
venue for 2008. Tucked away up in the
mountains in a little city known as Payson. The
Mazatzal Casino would lay host to this fantastic
Arizona Event. The casino did a fantastic job of
welcoming the players and there families. With
the hospitality of a 5-star hotel, great
restaurants, poker, cards and gaming, to
complimentary beverages for all the players,
Mazatzal truly was a classy venue.
But the real action happened to be in the Bingo
Hall. Which was converted into a spectacular
pool hall. 16 pro-cut Diamond Pro tables were
brought in and setup with plenty of space
separating them. Many chairs and tables were
setup for the spectators as well. The
tournament directors of Bull, Chuck and Mike
were high above the floor on a stage as to be
able to monitor the entire room.
60+ players showed up for the Men's Open
Singles event. Jerry Stuckart worked swiftly
through the top half of the bracket while
Robert Barry swept up the bottom half setting
up a great hot-seat battle. Jerry struck first
with a table run, that was quickly answered by
Robert's run out. Jerry pushed on with a lock-
up safety in game 3 and then took advantage of
a scratch to push his lead to 3 - 1. Robert ran
out the next game, only to watch Jerry run out
the following rack. At 4 - 2, Robert played a
great safe to close the lead to 4 - 3 in the race
to 5. In game 8 of this exciting hot-seat match,
Robert ran 5 balls while trying hard to break out his 6 ball that
was centered on the foot rail with a stripe blocking both
corner pockets. Using his last solid, he blasted a shot in the
corner and drew around the table 3 rails to try to obtain
position, only to watch the cue-ball fall in the corner pocket.
Jerry took ball and hand to run out the rack and take the Hot-
Seat.
Meanwhile on the 1-lose side of the board Bob Soto from
Prescott and Brandon Butler from Phoenix were busy sending
players home. Bob lost his 2nd round match to John Casey
with a score of 5 - 3 to setup a long road through the losers
side. Bob snapped off 8 wins in a row with dropping 4 or 5
games total. Brandon put together some impressive wins to
setup the 4th place match. Bob played flawlessly to take the
win leaving Brandon with 4th place and $350. But this is
where Bob's run would end as a hungry Robert Barry was
waiting to get another shot at Jerry waiting in the hot seat.
Bob Soto finished in a very hard fought 3rd place taking home
$650.
Jerry took some advice from his 3 year old daughter on the
phone in calling tails in the coin flip of the finals, which turned
out to be only his 2nd coin-flip win of the tournament. Jerry
broke and ran the first rack down but rattled the 8 on a tough back cut. After a few safe shots, Robert
left him on the same rail as the 8 with one of his stripes in the middle. Jerry slow rolled the bank and
pocketed the ball only to watch the cue-ball hang for a second and then fall in after. In rack 2 Robert
put the pressure on even more by running most of the table and locking Jerry up to take a quick 2 - 0
lead. They both exchanged racks for the next 2 games and then Robert benefited from Jerry's dry break
to get to the hill first at 4 - 2. Jerry looked extremely determined in his chair and was just awaiting a
chance to get back to the table as Robert broke for game 7. Robert's break came up dry and the white
ball got kicked to the bottom rail. Jerry took his time to survey the rack and methodically ran through
the entire rack. Now at 4 - 3, he appeared to be hungry as ever as he broke and ran the next game to
set up a hill-hill match. This 9th and final game turned into a huge safety battle as 3 balls were locked
up on the rail. Both players exchanged positioning on break balls back and forth. Robert got an open
window to break out the cluster but failed to make the ball. The missed ball went around 2 rails and
stopped blocking the 8 ball from the corner pocket. Jerry took his time to measure out the angle to get
the 8 out in the open. He pocketed his last ball and came 2 rails to push the 8 to the other end of the
table with the cue-ball following behind. One last cut in the corner and Jerry Stuckart became the 2008
Arizona State BCA 8-ball Champion. Robert took home $900 for his 2nd place finish. Jerry received
$1300 for the Championship. Congrat's to all the players for the great tournament!
